Zhao Online October Auctions: Modern Precious Metal Coins 1

Monday is the start of a busy October for online auction house, Zhao Online. The 6th October marks the first of five special events to be held this month featuring modern precious metal coins. The first of these auctions is to be held between the 6th and 9th October, falling just at the end of the national holiday or “golden week” that begins on 1st October and celebrates the founding of the PRC on that date in 1949.

Highlights from this round of auctions are the 1993 ‘Possessing a Piece of Homeland’: China’s Places of Interest, five-coin gold proof set. The set includes a 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz piece. Although the planned mintage for these sets was initially 8888, the actual mintage is much lower at just 2003 sets. They are in fantastic condition, with grades of NGC PF70 and PF69. These pieces, which make an attractive collection, were issued in 1993 by the People’s Bank of China and have the theme of famous places in China with great cultural and historical significance. They feature the Great Wall on their obverse faces and the “Five Sacred Daoist Mountains” on their reverse faces (one mountain per coin).

The second featured lot is the highly striking 2012 Peking Opera Masks (3rd series) Guan Yu 5 oz coloured proof gold coin, with a mintage of just 2000 pieces. This lot comes with the original box and certification, and has attained a grade of NGC PF69. The Peking Opera is known as quintessential Chinese culture with over 200 years of history. Like other forms of classical Chinese drama, the Peking Opera combines pleasant melodies, graceful postures, and epic narration, making it an amalgamation of literature, music, dance, and fine art. It is truly a multifaceted art form – a characteristic that is well captured in the colourful design of this coin. The reverse features the vivd opera face mask of the noble and brave warrior, Guan Yu, of The Romance of the Three Kingdom’s fame.
