Tomorrow, the 11th December 2014, Shanghai Hong Sheng (Hosane) auction house will be presiding over their 2014 Autumn Auction, featuring modern Chinese precious metal coins. This round of lots (nos. 6501-6783) numbering 283 in total, is to be presented at the Shanghai National Hotel. Highlights include the 1993 Ancient Inventions and Discoveries (series 2) ¼ oz platinum five-coin set; and the 2013 1 kilo Buddhist Site of Mt Putuo gold coin.
The 1993 Ancient Inventions and Discoveries set, serial no. 22, comes ungraded and from an incredibly small mintage of just 100 sets, most of which were initially sold to buyers in Japan. As a result they are rarely seen in Mainland Chinese markets, a fact which is strongly reflected in the reserve price of 400,000 RMB.
The 1 kilo Mt Putuo gold coin featuring the Goddess of Mercy, Guanyin, set against a background of buddhist scenery from the South China Sea and a sea water motif, is a highly attractive coin. With a mintage of just 300 and graded at NGC PF69, the reserve price of 360,000 RMB might seem a little conservative, especially given that current market estimates put its value at approximately 750,000 RMB.
