While the Chinese have a dynastic history dating back several thousand years, China as we know it today is relatively young. As a nation it has developed at a phenomenal rate over the past two hundred years, and this is particularly true of the 20th Century. This has been a very intense and tumultuous time for China, and a whole spectrum of events have occurred during a fairly short period that have made China what it is today. Many of these events are well worth celebrating, and as such many of them are the subject matter for a number of commemorative precious metal coin series issued by the People’s Bank of China. Key diplomatic events, revolutions, the births of influential Chinese politicians, and the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 are just some of the themes for these anniversary coins. Some sets are issued only on the key dates of the 25th and 50th anniversaries, or centenary of an event, for example. However, the more important events in the Chinese psyche, such as the founding of the PRC, are commemorated every ten years.
